Our Mission & Guiding Principles

To provide support and increase life participation for stroke survivors and their families

Guiding Principles

  • Recognizing the diversity among stroke survivors and their families, SAM works to create a welcoming and inclusive environment
  • SAM’s programming is evidence-based and informed by membership needs
  • SAM encourages mentoring and peer support in stroke recovery

Long-term Impact

Stroke survivors have the confidence and support to make the choices that meet their needs

The Stroke Recovery Association of Manitoba (SAM) has recently introduced a new Stroke Caregiver Group.  This is a peer support group uniquely for caregivers to help each other cope with the challenges of caring for a loved one who has experienced a stroke.

The impact of having a stroke can be significant.  A stroke survivor may have physical difficulties, problems with speech or swallowing, confusion and poor memory, reduced control over emotions and behavioral issues, along with other effects.  Loved ones of stroke survivors also experience dramatic changes to their lives. Learning about strokes and rehabilitation options, accessing helpful resources, and importantly, feeling emotionally supported are all needs that caregivers have, whether a spouse, child, parent, sibling, family member or friend.

If you are the caregiver of a loved one who has suffered a stroke, either recently or in the past, please call SAM at 204-942-2880 for further information about our Stroke Caregiver Group.  The group will meet on the third Wednesday of each monthat its office at Unit B – 247 Provencher Blvd in Winnipeg.  Our next two meetings will be held

  • Wednesday, February 20 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
  • Wednesday, March 20 from 1:00 pm to 3:00pm

If you are a caregiver, join us to share your stories, learn about stroke recovery, and receive support from other caregivers who have experienced significant life changes after their loved one has suffered a stroke.

A speaking group for anyone who has trouble speaking their mind, telling a joke or even (GASP!) speaking in public; in other words, everyone. Bring a joke if you have one handy. This is a perfect, friendly environment for anyone to practice a speech before they present it. Nothing beats speaking for making better communicators.
